How To Get Out of a "Rut" In Cornhole
May 01, 2023Getting into a rut in cornhole is frustrating. It makes people either want to quit, take a break, or go into crazy practice mode. Thankfully, there is a better solution...
The first rut I notice people fall into in cornhole is when they are transitioning out of the learning phase into the automation phase. This transition must happen once you get your throw down and you’re making a good amount in the hole. This is when you must switch from mainly operating in the head to mainly operating in the body.
Most people miss this signal and so when they start playing poorly they go back and attack their mechanics. They keep practicing and tweaking things to get out of the rut. What they don’t realize is they need to keep practicing the same throw and then go into pure automation (operating out of the body) in gameplay.
The second place I see people get into ruts is when they are learning a new shot. This switches them back into the learning phase and then they struggle to go back into automation for their regular slide shot. The solution is understanding how to get in and stay in the body so you can easily shift from the learning phase into automation whenever needed.
This also reduces tweaking shots that don’t need to be tweaked for more consistent cornhole play.
